SUMMARY:Stand-Up Comedy for Writers: Session 2
DESCRIPTION:Stand-up is a powerful tool for writers in any genre. It teaches you to simplify and reshape your material\, isolate your voice\, and understand how ideas land with a live audience. Over time\, you’ll become punchier\, more engaging\, and more fluid on your feet. But stand-up works very differently than writing on the page—and many writers struggle to translate their work into performance. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is designed for writers who are curious about trying stand-up\, and for stand-ups who write more than they perform (or want to). Each session explores an essential element of comedy that also applies to writing more broadly. We’ll focus on how it works in stand-up\, then zoom out to what carries across genres. \n\n\n\nThe sessions are designed as a series\, but each can be taken as a stand-alone class. The series will culminate in a “class show\,” where participants from some or all sessions can share their work in front of a writer-friendly audience at Bank Square. \n\n\n\nSession 2: Simplicity — What can you do in a few words or seconds?\n\n\n\nWhat can you do in a few words or seconds? What translates?Standup makes you keep things simple: at least at first. Sophisticated stand-ups can build complex structures and explore profound truths\, but it all follows from being able to simplify and control the moment. Participants will practice a few simple elements of stand-up and think about how they could expand on these little building blocks to make a whole world of their own. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Iscoe is a writer\, comedian\, and educator based in New London. He spent over a decade as a professional comedy writer in New York City\, writing for The Onion\, Funny or Die\, and various stage shows at the UCB\, Annoyance\, and PIT theaters\, as well as performing sketch\, stand-up\, and improv. He then got his fiction writing MFA at Bennington College\, where he learned an immense amount about writing and started a novel which he will finish once he doesn’t have to work so damn much (hopefully while he’s still alive). He now teaches writing\, communication\, and community engagement classes at Eastern Connecticut State University\, CT State Community College\, and Mitchell College. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister on Eventbrite

In this session\, participants will identify their comedic sensibility and learn how that voice can guide everything from idea generation to performance—resulting in a distinctive style that can’t be replicated. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Iscoe is a writer\, comedian\, and educator based in New London. SUMMARY:Map of the Story
DESCRIPTION:Build a new world and a new story\, using setting as the key.\n\n\nFantasy readers know that some of the best books of all time have a map at the beginning. But here’s a secret: every story has a map hidden behind it\, even if it isn’t printed on page 1. In this course\, we’ll build a new world and a new story at the same time\, using setting as the key to unlock characters\, plot\, backstory\, and more. We’ll look at a published example\, create story maps of our own\, and finish with some writing\, including an option to share work with the group. \n\n\n\nAge group: teen (13+) | Genre: fiction (any kind) | Required experience: none! | What to bring: pen and paper. We’ll be doing a bit of drawing in this class; colored pens/pencils are welcome too (but not required) \n\n\n\nMEET THE INSTRUCTOR\n\n\n\n\nMadelin Parsley grew up in the panhandle of Nebraska. She holds an M.F.A. in fiction from Vanderbilt University\, and her short stories have appeared in Ploughshares and Narrative Magazine. She’s currently working on a novel about five siblings\, two small towns\, and a family dynamic that is shaped and reshaped by grief. She has taught classes for writers of all ages and interests—in schools\, community centers\, libraries\, and once in the heart of a Tennessee swamp. \n\n\n\nRegister on Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Get the Magic Back
DESCRIPTION:We love writing—it’s part of who we are—but sometimes it can be really\, really hard. Maybe you’ve hit a wall with your current project\, or maybe you haven’t even picked up a pen in months. In this purely generative session\, we’ll discuss what it means to build a healthy writing practice: how to stay curious under pressure\, and what to do when fatigue or frustration strikes. Then\, we’ll dive into a set of micro-exercises designed to help us recapture a sense of joy in our work. \n\n\n\nAge group: adult | Genre: any | Required experience: none! | What to bring: pen and paper \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMadelin Parsley grew up in the panhandle of Nebraska. SUMMARY:Write to Heal
DESCRIPTION:Learn writing techniques to support honest self-expression and emotional release.\n\n\nMany of us carry life experiences that feel heavy\, unresolved\, or difficult to name—and how we move through those experiences matters. Writing can be a powerful tool for processing grief\, trauma\, and mental health struggles. Once words reach the page\, the focus often shifts from simply telling a story to releasing the emotions attached to it\, opening space for insight and healing. \n\n\n\nIn this introductory workshop\, participants will learn writing techniques that support honest self-expression and emotional release. Research has shown that writing can help alleviate stress\, promote physical health\, and strengthen emotional well-being. As we explore the lessons of our past without fear\, we create new possibilities for our future. \n\n\n\nNo experience needed. \n\n\n\nImportant note: Expressive Writing is not a substitute for therapy or medical treatment\, but it can be a powerful complementary practice for reducing stress and gaining deeper self-understanding. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMEET THE INSTRUCTOR\n\n\n\n\nNicole Roberge is the author of the memoir\, Hang in There\, Wherever ‘There’ is\, about her struggle and recovery from anorexia. It was through this journey that she discovered the healing modality of writing and served as a mentor to others in recovery. After earning her MFA in Creative Writing from Fairfield University\, she taught fiction and non-fiction workshops and went on to complete her Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Expressive and Creative Arts from Salve Regina University\, expanding her focus to include visual imagery\, movement\, theatre\, and sound. As a journalist\, she has been published in the Los Angeles Times\, ELLE girl\, Songfacts\, Script Magazine\, She Caribbean\, HER Sports\, Diverse in Education\, and The Hartford Courant\, as well as the journals Recovering the Soul and Hungry? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister on Eventbrite
